CWI Part C API 1104 practice module cover CWI Part A Fundamentals practice module cover

Part A doesn't give you a code book.

You're tested closed-book on a wide base of welding knowledge — processes, metallurgy, NDT, symbols. There's nothing to flip through. Just recall, under pressure.

Part C lets you use your codebook — then puts you against the clock.

Most candidates don't fail Part C from a lack of knowledge. They run out of time hunting for the right clause. Speed with the code book is a trained skill, not a given.

Inside each module

Developed around the published AWS CWI examination content areas — not generic welding trivia.

Part A · Fundamentals

Closed-book recall, trained the right way

  • Welding processes: SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SAW and where each is used
  • Metallurgy basics: heat-affected zone, preheat, interpass temperature
  • Discontinuities: porosity, incomplete fusion, undercut, lamellar tearing
  • All five core NDT methods and how to tell them apart fast
  • Reading standard weld symbols, arrow side vs. other side
  • Inspector duties before, during, and after welding — plus safety basics
Part C · API 1104

Open-book speed, not just open-book knowledge

  • A tabbing and indexing system for your own code book
  • Essential vs. non-essential variables in procedure qualification
  • Welder qualification ranges: position, diameter, thickness
  • Radiographic and visual acceptance criteria, indication by indication
  • Repair and re-examination requirements
  • Scenario questions written the way the real exam phrases them

Who's behind this

Kolbi Jones — Jonesbros Academy

Kolbi Jones founded Jonesbros Academy after more than 15 years in the welding and inspection industry. He started in 2009 as an NDE technician with Team Industrial Services, earning his radiation safety certification early in his career. Over the following nine years, he worked nondestructive examination across nearly every industrial setting — pipe fabrication shops, processing plants, pipelines, and facilities.

In 2018, he completed CWI exam preparation and earned his Certified Welding Inspector credential. Since then, he's worked as a welding inspector in plants and fabrication shops before moving into pipeline inspection, where he still works today.

Jonesbros Academy comes out of that field experience — built by someone who's worked both the technician and inspector sides of the job, and knows firsthand where candidates get tripped up on Part A and Part C.

Questions

Is this an official AWS product?+

No. Jonesbros Academy is independent study material and isn't affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by the American Welding Society or the American Petroleum Institute. It's built to reinforce concepts and build exam-taking speed alongside your primary study materials.

Do I still need the actual API 1104 code book for Part C?+

Yes — Part C is open book, and you're required to bring your own copy. This module teaches you how to navigate it quickly and reinforces the concepts tested; it doesn't replace the standard itself.

What format do I get, and how fast?+

A PDF, delivered instantly after checkout. It's readable on your phone, tablet, or desktop — no app required.

Does this cover Part B?+

No. Part B is the hands-on practical exam (measuring weld samples, applying acceptance criteria to physical parts). This bundle covers Part A and Part C only.

Can I print or share it?+

Your copy is licensed for personal use. It's watermarked and locked against redistribution — if you need it for a group or a training program, reach out about a team license instead of sharing a single copy.

I only need one part — can I buy just that?+

Yes. Part A and Part C are sold separately at $199 each, or together as the Bundle for $350.
